“The Margarita Poems are, without a doubt, one of the most powerful expressions of poetic and vital sentiment in late twentieth-century writing. {They} are a fundamental contribution to Puerto Rican, Latin American, and U.S. Latina Literature. Umpierre should be seen as a key (if often unacknowledged) participant and member of this historical moment in the development of Latina feminism. Friendship, passion, nutrition, wisdom, and, quite markedly, AMOR (LOVE), are portrayed as the human characteristics or traits that can reconstitute social bonds”  Larry La Fountain-Stokes in Queer Ricans (University of MN Press)
